FAAS-40: A tool to explore ADHD traits in adult women across five key areas.

Female Adult ADHD Training: FAAS-40 for GPs

FAAS-40 for GPs

CPD-accredited ADHD training to support referral decisions for women presenting with possible ADHD.

Women who present with possible ADHD are frequently missed, delayed, or misattributed to anxiety, stress, burnout, trauma, or hormonal transition. Many are articulate, high-masking, and outwardly coping while experiencing significant internal and functional strain.

In primary care, the challenge is rarely about spotting ADHD; it’s having a structured method to capture functional impact quickly, document it clearly, and decide whether a GP referral for specialist assessment is appropriate.

FAAS-40 is designed to support that exact clinical moment.

What FAAS-40 is

FAAS-40 is a non-diagnostic referral decision aid and structured functional awareness framework that enhances GP consultations by organizing information about lived functional impact across key life domains. It aids in gathering critical information often missing in female ADHD screening, such as masking, compensatory strategies, and internal load, translating it into clearer clinical documentation to improve referral quality.

What FAAS-40 is not

FAAS-40 is not:

- a diagnostic tool

- an ADHD screening test

- a psychometric predictor

- a replacement for specialist assessment

- a substitute for established NHS / Right to Choose pathways

It does not determine outcomes. It supports professional judgement.

Who this training is for

This CPD training focuses on ADHD training for: GPs and GP registrars, practice nurses / ANPs involved in initial presentations, primary care clinicians contributing to referral decisions, PCNs, women’s health hubs, and teams seeking consistent approaches to female ADHD screening.

What you’ll be able to do after the training:

Clinicians leave the course equipped to:

- structure consultations with women presenting with possible ADHD in a time-efficient manner,

- identify consistent patterns of lifelong functional impact rather than relying solely on surface symptoms,

- recognise female-pattern ADHD presentations and compensatory strategies,

- differentiate ADHD from overlapping presentations such as trauma, burnout, anxiety, menopause, and contextual overload,

- make clearer, more defensible referral decisions,

- write stronger referral letters that reduce rejection, delay, or misinterpretation,

- increase confidence while staying firmly within the scope of practice, enhancing GP referral training.

Why this matters for women

Women are disproportionately missed or delayed in ADHD pathways due to masking, socialisation, and gender bias in symptom recognition. This highlights the need for effective ADHD training, particularly in the context of female ADHD screening, to ensure that women's symptoms are recognized and addressed appropriately.

FAAS-40 supports a shift away from “how she appears” and towards how she functions — improving fairness, clarity, and patient experience while protecting clinicians and pathways, including those involved in GP referral training.

FAQs

Is this the same as diagnosing ADHD? No. FAAS-40 is not diagnostic. It supports GP referral training and consultations, aiding decision-making only. Does this replace NHS or Right to Choose processes? No. It complements existing pathways by enhancing the quality and clarity of consultation documentation and referral letters. Will this increase referrals? It typically improves appropriateness. In many settings, it helps reduce missed referrals (women who should have been referred) while also minimizing inappropriate referrals through clearer differentiation and documentation. Is this suitable if we already use ASRS or other tools? Yes. FAAS-40 is designed to support functional mapping and structured consultation flow, making it an excellent addition to any ADHD training and aligning well with existing questionnaires where appropriate. Can we run it as a practice session? Yes. Practice sessions are available and can be tailored to your team’s needs and time constraints.
